Video backgrounds in Zoom, on your Mac
Updated October 2026 · checked against Zoom's own documentation
Short answer
Yes, Zoom can use a video as your background: its desktop app takes an MP4 or MOV between 480×360 and 1920×1080, on computers that meet Zoom's requirements. Backdrop Cam is for when you want the same moving background in every app, a finer cut-out around hair and hands, or video backgrounds in apps that don't have them.
What Zoom supports on its own

How to use a video background in Zoom
Pick your video in Backdrop Cam
Click the Backdrop Cam icon in the menu bar, then the background thumbnail. Add a clip with +, from Photos, or by dragging a video file in. Click a tile to use it.
Choose Backdrop Cam in Zoom
In Zoom, open Settings → Video (Video & Effects in newer versions) → Camera → Backdrop Cam. In a meeting, click the arrow next to Start/Stop Video and pick it there.
Set Zoom's virtual background to None
In Backgrounds & effects, choose None so Zoom doesn't cut you out again.
Zoom's built-in video backgrounds
Zoom is one of the few apps with native video backgrounds: Settings → Backgrounds & effects → + → Add Video, with an MP4 or MOV from 480×360 to 1920×1080. Zoom notes that video backgrounds and backgrounds without a green screen need more system resources than images. If that's all you need, use it.
When Backdrop Cam is the better fit
- One background everywhere. Zoom's library lives in Zoom. Backdrop Cam's works in Zoom, Meet, Teams, FaceTime, Slack and anything else with a camera picker.
- Hair-level edges. Backdrop Cam's Best quality uses Robust Video Matting, a production matting model, on the Neural Engine.
- Switch from the menu bar without opening Zoom's settings mid-call.
- Any length, H.264 or HEVC, straight from Photos.
Questions
Can Zoom use a video as a background?
Yes. Zoom's desktop app accepts MP4 or MOV files from 480×360 to 1920×1080, if your computer meets Zoom's virtual background requirements.
Should I use Zoom's video background or Backdrop Cam?
If you only use Zoom, Zoom's own feature is fine. Backdrop Cam helps when you also use Meet, Teams or FaceTime, or want a finer cut-out. Don't use both at once: set Zoom's background to None.
Why can't I add a video background in Zoom?
Zoom hides video backgrounds on computers below its requirements, and admins can turn virtual backgrounds off. Backdrop Cam runs on any Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.
