A video background in Google Meet, on your Mac

Updated October 2026 · checked against Google Meet's own documentation

Short answer

Google Meet can't use your own video as a background. You can blur, pick one of Google's backgrounds (a few of them animated) or upload a still image. To put a looping video of your choice behind you, use a virtual camera: Backdrop Cam cuts you out on your Mac and Meet simply sees a camera called Backdrop Cam.

Blur, Google's own static and animated backgrounds, and your own still images. No uploads of your own video.

How to use a video background in Google Meet

  1. Pick your video in Backdrop Cam

Click the Backdrop Cam icon in the menu bar, then the background thumbnail. Add a clip with +, from Photos, or by dragging a video file in. Click a tile to use it.

  2. Choose Backdrop Cam in Meet

In a meeting, click ⋮ More options → Settings → Video → Camera → Backdrop Cam. Before joining, you can also pick it from the camera menu under your preview.

  3. Turn off Meet's own effects

Open Backgrounds and effects and turn visual effects off. Otherwise Meet cuts you out a second time and the edges look doubled.

Why Meet won't play your own video

Meet's effects run in the browser tab. Google ships its own immersive backgrounds, some of them animated, and lets you upload still images, but there's no upload for a video file. Some how-to articles and AI answers say you can upload an MP4; as of October 2026 Google's own help page lists only images.

A virtual camera sidesteps this. Meet doesn't need to know anything about backgrounds: it receives finished video from Backdrop Cam, with you already in front of your clip.

Works in every browser Meet runs in

Backdrop Cam is a real macOS camera, so it works in Chrome, Safari, Arc, Edge and Firefox. If it isn't listed, reload the Meet tab, and check that your browser is allowed to use the camera in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

Chrome extensions that add video backgrounds to Meet work only in that browser and only on meet.google.com, and they compete with Meet for CPU in the same tab. Backdrop Cam does the cut-out once, on the Neural Engine, for every app.

Your self-view looks mirrored

That's normal. Meet mirrors your own preview; everyone else sees the right way round. Backdrop Cam's Mirror my preview setting changes only Backdrop Cam's own preview.

Questions

How do I put a video as my background in Google Meet?

Meet itself only accepts still images. Add your video to Backdrop Cam, then choose Backdrop Cam in Meet: ⋮ More options → Settings → Video → Camera. Turn off Meet's own backgrounds and effects.

Can I upload an MP4 as a Google Meet background?

No. As of October 2026, Meet's custom backgrounds are images only. Its animated backgrounds come from Google. A virtual camera like Backdrop Cam is how you use a video of your own.

Why is there no background option in Google Meet?

Workspace admins can turn backgrounds off, older browsers or computers without WebGL can't run them, and guests who aren't signed in can only change effects once they're in the meeting. Backdrop Cam doesn't depend on any of these: Meet just sees a camera.

Will other people see my real room if Backdrop Cam stops?

No. If Backdrop Cam isn't running, Backdrop Cam shows a plain Backdrop Cam card instead of your camera. Your real camera is never passed through without the cut-out.
